Yet only one place has ever persuaded me that choosing between them was unnecessary. Menton. There is a moment that arrives in certain places when your camera quietly stops leading the journey. You still take photographs, of course. You frame the pastel houses, the blue Mediterranean, the cathedral rising above the old rooftops. Yet somewhere between pressing the shutter and lowering your phone, another collection has already begun. Not inside your camera, but inside your memory. None of the photographs will remember Menton exactly as it was. Yet somehow, I will. On the eastern edge of the French Riviera, where France gradually yields the coastline to Italy, lies a town that appears almost improbably composed. Geography has done more than provide scenery here. It has quietly edited where the town could grow, how light reaches its streets and what colours survive beneath the Mediterranean sun. The walk begins beside the sea. The promenade follows the curve of the bay instead of correcting it. Palm trees interrupt the pavement at measured intervals. Café terraces stretch towards the water. Elderly couples sit facing the horizon. The sea arrives gently enough that conversations continue uninterrupted. At first, it feels unmistakably Provençal. Warm façades, shuttered windows and quiet squares could easily belong to the South of France. Then the lemons begin to appear. Not one or two trees in a sheltered garden, but everywhere—on market stalls, in pastries, in ceramics, in the perfume drifting from small artisan shops. Sheltered by mountains, warmed by the Mediterranean and cultivated across generations, the lemons become a natural expression of the same landscape that shaped the town itself. Elsewhere, they are ingredients. Here, they have become an identity. Lunch continues the conversation between France and Italy. Fresh seafood, handmade pasta, olive oil, local wines and delicate pastries arrive without ceremony.
