In our previous article, we took you on a road trip from Johannesburg to Cape Town – visiting wine farms, eating at rustic beach eateries, and saying ‘hello’ to the penguin colonies of the Western Cape.

In part 2 of our journey, we head back to Johannesburg, but this time through the Garden Route – a 300-kilometer coastal road between Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay. This scenic route is the most beautiful in South Africa and popular among tourists, as well as locals.

Our first stop was Hermanus: The Ultimate South African Coastal Getaway. Located along the southern coast of South Africa, Hermanus is a charming seaside town known for its picturesque landscapes, whale watching, and vibrant arts and culture scene.

One of the main attractions in Hermanus is whale watching. From June to November, southern right whales can be spotted from the shore, as they come to breed and give birth in the protected bay. There are also boat tours available for a closer look at these magnificent creatures.

For those interested in arts and culture, Hermanus has a thriving creative community. The town is home to many galleries, studios, and workshops, where visitors can view and purchase unique handmade crafts, paintings, and sculptures. In addition to these attractions, Hermanus also offers a wide range of restaurants, cafes, and shops, making it the perfect destination for foodies and shoppers alike.

In addition to southern right whales, visitors may also spot humpback whales, Bryde’s whales, dolphins, and seals. This stretch of coastline is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who visit.

Nestled along the picturesque Garden Route, Knysna is a charming town known for its natural beauty and outdoor adventures. The town is situated on the shores of a stunning lagoon, which is fed by five rivers and surrounded by lush forests and rolling hills. Visitors can take a scenic cruise on the lagoon, hike through the forests, or simply relax on one of the many beautiful beaches.

One of the most popular attractions in Knysna is the Knysna Heads, a pair of towering sandstone cliffs that mark the entrance to the lagoon. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the coastline from the top of the cliffs, or explore the nearby caves and rock formations.

Located along the Garden Route, Tsitsikamma National Park is a natural wonderland that offers visitors a chance to explore some of the country’s most stunning landscapes. The park is situated along the rugged coastline of the Indian Ocean, where visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the sea, as well as the towering cliffs and lush forests that surround it. Tsitsikamma National Park is also home to the world-renowned Otter Trail, a multi-day hiking route that takes visitors through some of the most beautiful scenery in the park.

In addition to hiking, Tsitsikamma National Park offers a range of other outdoor activities, including snorkeling, kayaking, quad biking and bungee jumping. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, including baboons, vervet monkeys, and a diverse array of bird species.

One of the park’s main attractions is the Storms River Mouth, a dramatic gorge where visitors can explore the forest, cross the suspension bridge, and swim in the crystal-clear pools. There are also many scenic drives and viewpoints throughout the park, allowing visitors to take in the stunning landscapes from the comfort of their cars.

…For those interested in learning about the park’s history and ecology, there is a visitors’ center that offers informative exhibits and guided tours.

For our final stop of the journey, we explore Oyster Bay. It is a small coastal town known for its tranquil beaches and natural beauty. The town is situated on a secluded bay, surrounded by rugged cliffs and rolling hills.

Oyster Bay is a popular destination for visitors looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and unwind in a peaceful and picturesque setting.
